It appears the Yankees may have to play the rest of the 2013 regular season without Mark Teixeira.

The Yankees announced that team physician Dr. Chris Ahmad and other hand specialists have recommended surgery on the first baseman’s sore wrist after an MRI confirmed his torn tendon sheath had not healed adequately. Teixeira originally tore the tendon while hitting off a tee during the World Baseball Classic on March 5.

At a Wednesday afternoon press conference, Teixeira said the wrist surgery will require four to five months of rest and rehabilitation, but he expects to be back at 100 percent in six months.

Teixeira initially showed some pop in his bat upon returning from the disabled list on May 31, but went 3-for-31 over the next nine games and hit .151/.270/.340 in 15 games.
